Canaveral Seashore Paintout kick off

We were privileged to receive a ranger-led tour of the Canaveral Seashore National Park today. The above photo was taken from atop Turtle Mound.

How often do you get to look over top of palm trees to the ocean beyond?? Awesome.

I'm excited to be painting on this barrier island to add to the series with Sapelo Island.

fyi....It's coooolllllddddd and WINDYYYYYY. Tuesday and Wednesday, when the weather warms, we'll be painting downtown on Flagler and Canal streets.

The speedier painters will have wet paintings on display (and sale) starting tomorrow.

Friends of Canaveral (FOC) will host the

first annual Canaveral Seashore Paint Out from Monday, November 8, through Saturday, November 13, 2010.

Thirty of the most talented landscape artists from Florida and the Northeast will bring their paint boxes and easels to the seashore and surrounding areas in Mosquito Lagoon, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and historic downtown New Smyrna Beach. They will create one-of-a-kind paintings "en plein air " (in open air).

Visitors and guests can view and be a part of the creative process—walk the seashore trails and the downtown sidewalks, talk with and get to know the artists, and possibly take home a painting they have fallen in love with.

The artists will be painting from dawn to dusk for the five days of the Paint Out. As paintings are completed, they will be hung in an on-site “wet room” (gallery) for sale immediately.

More Than 30 Artists Painting All Week at Canaveral National Seashore.

There will also be additional opportunities for art lovers and patrons to view and purchase on line and during three sponsored, ticketed evening events (artists’ welcome barbeque, midweek reception and closing patrons’ gala).

Floridians are especially attached to the Suwannee River, known to most of you as Swannee River as in "way down by the."

Not only has this painting been juried into the 2010 Thomas Center Galleries Regional Juried Exhibition, but it caught the eye of wonderful patron -to -be.

Lynne P. of Ohio emailed an inquiry. Turned out I had two other Suwanee River paintings, smaller and more affordable. Now I have only one, because Lynne is displaying the other in her home.

She wrote the most beautiful testimonial:

Classic Mike's Fish Camp

Staying at Mike's Fish Camp during the Evinston Paint Out let me soak in the ambiance; morning light, noon, evening, night, clouds, bugs, alligators, cranes, fisherman coming and going at all hours.

The boater appeared as I was finishing this afternoon scene. I took a mental snapshot and painted him in. This was my last painting of the event. I like it.

It's always good to be happy with your most recent work.

Here's the cluster of palms at Fair Oaks I painted at the Evinston Paint Out on an overcast day.

*At least it's similar to the painting....which actually looks better. Yes it does. Just can't get the best image of those quickly sold ones. Not that I'm complaining....

Fair Oaks Farm at Evinston

I was packed for the Evinston Paint Out. Then I unpacked to make room for artist friends as we hiked around Evinston and golf cart rode around Fair Oaks Farm.

Above is a golf cart view of a sun-dappled path and breezing Spanish moss on the back acres of beautiful Fair Oaks Farm. It's one of the painting sites this year; the only site where the artists will be tricky to find....but worth it.

I've repacked several times over, always thinking of something else. Last thing into the hatch was bungee cords...handy for securing odd sized canvases to the easel.

People are amazed at how each artist's set-up is as varied as the artwork. If you're in the area, come soak up the local ambiance, watch art be created, and maybe even take home a souvenir.

Shhhh....my car is already packed with linen on birch boards, paints, brushes, outdoor easel, chair, hat, and umbrella (for sun.)

I've painted the area many times which means I've got some favorite spots in mind and know when the light is best for them. I'll scout out some more tomorrow; see where the wildflowers are blooming. It's close enough to come home every night. yay

We get to paint on private properties like where that cow above is hanging out. Onlookers will find the artists via hayride. They also get to watch art being created and purchase a favorite knowing part of the proceeds goes to Conservation Trust of Florida to keep our rural areas free from development.

Different this year is that the big weekend to watch is this one...the opening weekend. We're expecting a good crowd.

The Evinston Paint Out is a favorite with locals and plein air painters. This homespun no-stoplight town is worth exploring. If you go there, you'll see this house and cows... guaranteed.

Open Air Arts Painting Event - - tomorrow!

Cypress Knees is about as small (8x8 oil) and intimate as a landscape can get. Cypress trees grow near and in fresh water in Florida, staining the water a tea color. Those bumps around the base are called "knees."

The Orange Lake Overlook view is a bit like my plein air oil painting, but instead of 6 x 6 inches, it goes on as far as you can see.

Annie Pais and Stewart Thomas did Florida's Eden proud as always in combining ecology, education, and fun. The new Heart of Florida Scenic Guide is more beautiful than I could imagine. I'm proud to be a small part of this organization.

Lots of folks eager to bask in the first glorious Florida spring day arrived with cameras and smiles. I got to meet some lovely people and catch up with old friends. It doesn't get any better.

The painting above got its moniker because my newest patron bought it wet off the easel along with another, its mysteriously never photographed twin.

She had fun watching me paint what she was seeing. I had fun sharing her pleasure.

p.s. A third painting...the one with the white building....scraped it off....in case you were wondering.

Twenty-five MPH, previously chosen by Elin Pendleton for her book, has been selected for The Fifth Annual Artists Registry.com Members Juried Exhibit.

"ArtistsRegistry.com is an international community of visual and performing artists. We connect artists together with galleries, museums, and arts organizations...." Indeed they did connect me with Comma Gallery at last year's exhibit and I'm eager for this year's.

The exhibit is at Gallery on Avalon Island, Orlando, Florida. Opening reception is Thursday, December 17 th from 6-9 pm. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit continues till January 11, 2010.

Feathered Meditation was inspired by my 2007 Sapelo Island, GA artist in residency. If you're ever on the Georgia coast, plan a visit. Advance planning is necessary as they keep a record of every human to steps on this tiny island. So beautiful!

Sapelo Marsh Sunset is only 12 x 24 inches allowing for intimate viewing of a vista (in contrast to Sapelo Sunset diptych.) The setting sun was humongous so near the horizon. The dramatic cloud cover won my heart. This scene is a close up of my favorite part of the expansive view from the dock behind the duty quarters that housed me during my 2007 artist in residency on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Finally got to paint it!

Two TAll Paintings at Brick City Center for the Arts

Sharpes Ferry Bridge IV - the one with the anole and Sapelo Island Sunset diptych are the large paintings anchoring my wall in the OoHA HUGS Ocala art exhibit and sale.
The talented and wise Dr. Leslie Hammond chose these and 5 smaller pieces to hang between them.

The plan is to hang more small paintings from each of us in OOHA on movable walls in time for the opening celebration on Friday.

(The palms from the previous post could not be squeezed in, but we can arrange a special viewing. Just email me.)

Dr. Hammond hung only the choicest works, both excellent and affordable.

Historic Farmhouse at Alpine Park, Switzerland, Florida

This is almost what my painting of the farmhouse looks like. Just one more session of refining shadows and details, and signing the painting.

But I didn't photograph it again.

No matter. It looks different now. The painting took a tumble and scrape revealing more of the red underpainting on the right next to the big window. People volunteered how much they liked the new look. So after thumb-rubbing out the scratches, I left it.

This painting is embedded with genuine paint out sand. A true original.

The North Florida Land Trust committee will exhibit it and others at several area venues such as Shannon's Pub and local art walks. It's a great idea to bring this event to more people while promoting next year's.

My Grandma's Flabby Arm

My grandma's flabby arm grabs my paintbrush whenever a camera points my way. Uncanny.

That said, I have to credit good friend Carole Drost who dropped her brushes long enough to sneak these two totally candid snapshots. And I thank her for mostly minimizing the jiggles.

A huge thank you to Michelle Foster and everyone at Blakely House. They treated us like royalty.

And another ton of thanks to my friends, family, and patron/friends who came by and made my day so much fun.

So I set out early to the Thomas Center reception, yet arrived 53 minutes later than Lady Garmin had promised. And this was the interstate!

Total gridlock in downpour at rush hour. Couldn't even exit.

Apparently Gainesville's college town population quadrupled Tuesday at the start of school. Silly me.

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the weather and drove a smarter route to a most successful Thomas Center Galleries reception.

I especially appreciate that Nancy Ledding, Director of Brick City Arts Center, and County Commissioner Barbara Fitos greeted me with smiles, hugs, and congrats.

The two were bursting with plans for Marion County's art scene. It's gonna happen, and we know who to thank.

Gainesville, Fla. - The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs announce the opening of the 9th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition, which will run from August 8 – September 20, 2009 in the Thomas Center Main Gallery. A free public exhibition reception will be held Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 5 – 7 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m.

This year’s juror, Michael Burban, selected 36 works from 326 submissions. The selected Florida artists include: Anthony Ackrill, Carol Barber, Herbert Bressack, Janis Brothers, Courtney Crowell, Frank Curtis, Jack Dickard, Dan Dobson, Lorelei Esser, Michael Everett, Jon Frey, Sandra J. Michael Burban is the Gallery Director and Fine Arts Instructor at St. John’s River Community College. Michael is experienced in drawing and painting and has received several grants and awards. Burban has an extensive teaching background at such institutions as the Art Students League New York, the National Academy of Design New York, Cooper Union, the Montclair Museum Art School and the Summit Art Center in New Jersey. He has instructed courses on figure drawing, figure painting and landscape painting, as well as coordinated workshops abroad to Mexico, Switzerland and Morocco. Burban has authored multiple publications including his book, Lessons from Michelangelo and the article, “From Delusion to Mastery: the Study of Art.” His work has been exhibited at the Art Students League Gallery in New York, the ASL/Fine Arts Society Gallery in New York, and the National Academy of Design.

Thirty something years ago, we lived in Chapel Hill, NC. Good friend and now fabulous batik artist Phyllis Boger introduced me to painting in watercolor, and the rest is history.

The first time I heard a salesperson say "Y'all come back now!" I took it literally and started to explain how it wasn't likely because..... Her expression was priceless.

Rick and I are newly back from a shivering but kvelling visit with Dustin in a foggy San Francisco. We even got to cook out with his kitties and cohorts.We hiked, we ate, we wine-tasted, we museumed. If you are near Gainesville, FL August 8 - September 13, I hope you'll come see Mc Intosh Memories and other fine art and sculptures at the 2009 Thomas Center Galleries Regional Juried Exhibition.

I am honored beyond words that Michael Burban, formerly of Art Students League in NY and currently of Florida School of the Arts selected my piece as one of 36 works submitted by 115 artists.

The exhibit, with most works available for purchase, runs from August 8 to September 13. The ambience is old world elegance.

August 27 from 5:00 - 7:00 is a reception. The food is always first rate. Come early; it goes fast.

Bartow Plein Air 2

This is my favorite of three 6x 8 plein air paintings from last year's Bartow paint out. Sometimes a painting almost paints itself.

Does anyone know the name of the church? This painting deserves a better name.

I'll miss it this year due to a conflict; the Out of Hand Artists (OOHA!) show at Brick City Center for the Arts in Ocala, FL.

I'm working on a couple of posts about art donations to auctions for fundraising.....and how to sweeten the pot for all participants.

View from a Cedar Key Bench

I will always remember the bench; it had gum on it.

Said gum wasn't discovered till I was back in the garage and stepping out of the car. My butt stuck to the seat!

It was sooo worth it! A lovely, balmy day. Low tide in Cedar Key, Florida where short roads terminate at gulf access mini parks.

View from a Bench is a 5 x 7 plein air oil painting. One of my first on location pieces. Since it's in my studio, it could be in your hands in about 3 days.

Variations of a palm tree in a field are a favorite subject for me. This 8 x 10 oil on board is called Evinston Palm no. 18.

Autumn is one of our prettiest to paint. Not so, winter. A winter scene doesn't look like Florida. My opinion.

I made it a priority to learn to paint palm trees with individual personalities. No lollipops.

For the art collector, buying art online is easy and convenient. And it's as fast as we expect our internet shopping experience to be.

Why hesitate?

What's missing from the internet art shopping experience?

It's the personal connection you can get with the artist from art festivals and paint outs. It's the guidance you can get from art gallery expertise.

I like to call them warm fuzzies. They nourish the soul hand in hand with purchasing original artwork.

More artists are selling online directly to their art collectors. Some artists offer buy-it-now buttons on their own sites or blogs. Other artists belong to group galleries and stores. Many do both.

How can you take advantage and still feel confident?

Try these six tips.

1. Know this. Computer monitors are all different. Recently I was in a room with 3 laptops all showing the same painting. One looked bluer. One looked sunnier. And one showed less vivid color.

Be aware of the actual dimensions of the art; paintings tend to all look the same size online.

2. Try this. Purchase art from artists whose work you have seen in person.

3. Do this. If there is an opportunity to contact the artist or seller with questions, do it.

Ask how the original painting might look different in person.

This is especially important if the surface is textured. There's just no way to capture that richness digitally.

4. Look for the return policy. Since the original painting almost always looks better than the digital version, most artists offer generous return policies. They are rarely needed.

A good artist does not want you to keep artwork you do not love. A good artist wants you to love your painting, and to share your pride in ownership. A good artist wants you to be a life-long customer.

5. Give your credit card info only through a secure site. Paypal is safe. They spend most of their time on security.

6. Ask about time payments. I have recently begun offering free shipping for art collectors who choose this option.

Six plein air painters will be painting on site all day Saturday, May 9 from 9:30 - 3:00 to celebrate Mothers Day at Gruffs Tap and Grille at 19773 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Dunnellon, FL, 34430..

Dining here makes you feel like you are on vacation. Gruffs is on the beautiful Rainbow River not far from Rainbow Springs attraction. That red kayak in the photo was launched right across the street, so bring your canoe, paddle boat, or inner tube and have a full day's fun.

They make a great blackened grouper sandwich on a kaiser roll. You can eat indoors, on the porch, or outdoors. There’s plenty of room for kids and even a huge sand pile with toys.

Jackie Schindehetti, Mary Verrandeaux, and I are from Out of Hand Artists (OOHA) art salon. I'm looking forward to painting with old friends and meeting 3 new ones.

12,000 Florida citrus growers cultivate approximately 100 million citrus trees on more than 748,000 acres of land. More than 90,000 other people also work in the citrus industry or in related businesses.

COMMA GALLERY is Celebrating Citrus, Florida Style by inviting some of Florida’s finest Florida artists to serve up the results of their citrus inspired art. All manner of landscape, still life and conceptual citrus related art will be shown in three consecutive but changing exhibits March 10th through June 5th.

A Taste of Citrus Art opens March 10th. The abundance of the crop of art available surprised gallery owner and curator Kim Sumner. “As we started looking we realized there was more Citrus art than we imagined. So we split the show into three parts in order to showcase as much talent as possible.” The gallery scrambled to pick what was ripe and save more for later. By a bit of ingenious maneuvering also know as making lemonade from lemons, COMMA came up with a recipe for sweet citrus success.

Celebrating Citrus: Still Life will showcase interpretations of Citrus not in the landscape. COMMA Gallery will host an opening Still Life artists reception April 10th 6:30-9pm. (I will be there. Please join us if you are in Orlando.)

Citrus has been a symbol in many cultures.

In ancient writings, Alexander the Great brought citrus from India into Greece, Turkey, and North Africa in the late 4th century BC. The most ancient citrus was called ‘citron.’ There are ancient clues from wall paintings in the Egyptian temple at Karnak that citrus trees had been growing there. Citrus appears in other art from the ruins of Pompeii as well as Carthage in North Africa. Greek and Romans as well as early Christian tile mosaics from Istanbul shows various citrus.

It appears established that Christopher Columbus introduced citrus on the island of Haiti in 1493 There are records that citrus trees were well established in the American colonies in about 1565 at Saint Augustine, Florida, and in coastal South Carolina.

While traveling down the Saint John’s River in Florida the early American explorer, William Bartram, in his 1773 book Travels mistakenly thought orange trees were native to Florida; however, they were established centuries earlier by the Spanish explorers.

Grapefruit was a relative late-comer, arriving in Florida in 1806 courtesy of the French Count, Odet. After the Spanish gave up their territories and its many orange groves to the United States the citrus industry rapidly developed. In the 1880’s shipments of oranges, grapefruit, limes, and lemons that were sent to Philadelphia and New York by railway and ships Orange juice was even traded on the Commodities Exchange in NYC.

The Florida freezes in 1894 and 1899, wiped out Satsuma orange trees. More acreage was destroyed in the hard freeze of 1916. Some citrus production moved further south and also shifted from Florida to California.

How Green are my Pet Portraits?

Art supply manufacturers are making sure artists and art collectors know of their efforts to be environmentally friendly.

The pencils are figuratively green. The one on the right is in a pencil holder that keeps the pencil good to the very last drop. The stub shows you I've been green for a long time already.

Pencil pet portraits are on Bienfang 100% cotton very heavy paper, more like a board. Ergo tree friendly.

You want to hang a picture, but how high is too high?

You want to hang your new picture, but how high?
A rule of thumb is to hang your picture at eye level.

You went to a dinner party and saw pictures that look way too high? Why?

This is very common in a dining area. What's happenig is your eye level is higher walking in the hallway than sitting in the dining room.

Hallway pictures should be hung higher than living and dining room pictures or anywhere else you spend your time seated.

How should your new picture hang in relation to other pictures in the room?

You can line them horizontally level by their tops, middles, or bottoms depending on what looks best. Vertically, line pictures up by their centers.

Frame a Pencil Drawing the Easy Way

If you purchased your pencil, also called graphite, drawing from me, it is on 100@ cotton, tree friendly, acid-free Bristol board, which is heavier than most papers. It has a great surface to draw on and lasts for generations if well cared for.

When completed, I sprayed it with two types of fixative including a matte varnish to increase water resistance and smudge resistance.

Any work on paper needs to be framed under glass or Plexiglas. Your 12x9 artwork will fit easily into a standard store bought frame with glass. Black, gray, and silver frames work especially well with graphite.

Or you can choose to mat the art to a different shape and size for your decorating needs.

The purpose of a mat is to keep the art from touching the glass especially if condensation is an issue. If matting, I recommend using an offwhite mat similar to the Bristol. That will focus the attention away from the mat and onto the drawing.Matted work looks good with a narrow frame.

If leaving unmatted, “spacers” can keep the art from touching the glass. A framer should be able to sell them to you separately. They are long self-sticking strips which cut easily with scissors and stick to the glass. Alternatively, you or the framer can cut two thin strips of mat board and stick them along the long dimension of the frame to serve as spacers.

As with any artwork, avoid hanging in direct sunlight.

Enjoy your heirloom quality portrait for many years.

Brief pencil portrait slide show

Jasmine is a German short haired pointer who loves hard work. Bred as a hunting dog, she is dark brown with a matching brown nose. A big nose is a plus for this breed.

Sapelo Sunset Mini

I love drama of backlit scenes. This spot was just outside my Sapelo Island apartment. Sapelo has glorious sunsets and is a favorite haunt for birders.

This is also a study for an as yet unfinished large painting. It's a diptych with one panel over the other. You can see the diptych in progress here.

A pet portrait in pencil has all the charm of a full color portrait. This seems like the right year to showcase pencil portraits. They are an affordable alternative.

The 12 x 9 drawing is on 2 ply acid-free Bristol smooth surface. It's not really gray at all; more of an off white cream color. This particular paper has two surfaces. One side is coated and slick. I drew on the other side which I believe is better for pencil. The pencil works great for a curly black dog.

The hard part is photographing a black dog. I took the reference photo outdoors in soft light. Think it was overcast.

How do you get a dog to pose? I pretended to play fetch. She got very alert.

How do you get a cat to pose? Haven't a clue.

This intimate alla prima landscape of grapefruit hanging from my daughter's tree on a frosty morning was won in auction created just for my enews subscribers. Alla prima means it was painted all at once, in one session.

It was great fun. Wonder if it would have been more fun if people could watch the bidding. So much to learn!

I painted Cedar Key, Florida intimate landscapes in all 4 seasons. They make a nice set and can be displayed as 4 across or down or even a square. Framed, wired, and ready to hang. They also tuck nicely into bookshelf crannies, one of my favorite places for small paintings.

The pictured bamboo is one of many varieties growing at the beautiful Kanapaha Bontanical Gardens in Gainesville, FL. .... about 40 minutes north of my home. It's also where I got the reference for the painting Banana Jewel.

Above is a work in progress on location just for the fun of seeing painting and place. Click to see the finished painting. That bamboo and a commissioned companion painting now add to the ambiance of a Gainesville law office.
