9th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition at the Thomas Center Galleries
Gainesville, Fla. - The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs announce the opening of the 9th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition, which will run from August 8 – September 20, 2009 in the Thomas Center Main Gallery. A free public exhibition reception will be held Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 5 – 7 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m.
This year’s juror, Michael Burban, selected 36 works from 326 submissions. The selected Florida artists include: Anthony Ackrill, Carol Barber, Herbert Bressack, Janis Brothers, Courtney Crowell, Frank Curtis, Jack Dickard, Dan Dobson, Lorelei Esser, Michael Everett, Jon Frey, Sandra J. Hadley, Marie Hammer, Susan Torgerson James, Sue Jester, Willene Johnson, Greg Johnson, Robert Kamarowski, Wes Kline, Allison LeBaron, Nan Szypulski-Lewis, Mandy Macias, Ken McMurry, Kevin McNamara, Nancy Moskovitz, Melanie Peter, Sherrie Pettigrew, Natalie Richardson, Dan Rountree, Ed Rowe, IrĂ©ne Salley, Steve Thrift, Ginnie Ungewitter, Kirk Upthegrove, Nancy Hamlin-Vogler and Mark S. Zimmerman.
Michael Burban is the Gallery Director and Fine Arts Instructor at St. John’s River Community College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Fine Arts from Vermont College. Michael is experienced in drawing and painting and has received several grants and awards. Burban has an extensive teaching background at such institutions as the Art Students League New York, the National Academy of Design New York, Cooper Union, the Montclair Museum Art School and the Summit Art Center in New Jersey. He has instructed courses on figure drawing, figure painting and landscape painting, as well as coordinated workshops abroad to Mexico, Switzerland and Morocco. Burban has authored multiple publications including his book, Lessons from Michelangelo and the article, “From Delusion to Mastery: the Study of Art.” His work has been exhibited at the Art Students League Gallery in New York, the ASL/Fine Arts Society Gallery in New York, and the National Academy of Design.
The Thomas Center Galleries are located at 302 NE 6th Ave., Gainesville, FL 32601. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., new Tuesday hours from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturdays 1-4 p.m. The galleries are closed for observed holidays.
